This week Fort Lauderdale transforms into a culinary playground boasting 30 curated epicurean events, dinners, classes and demonstrations during the Visit Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival (VLFWF). This week-long, annual event celebrates celebrity chefs, local restaurants and delightful food, with events throughout the week, culminating in the festival’s two headline weekend events, “The Grand Tasting” and “Picnic in the Park.”

The annual festival has gained such a fan-following that unfortunately most events, including “The Grand Tasting” hosted by award-winning chef, TV personality and MasterChef Judge Aarón Sánchez, are already sold out. But don’t worry. There are still two great events available: the Wok ‘n’ Roll Asian Street Food & Music Experience on Thursday night, and the “Picnic in the Park” event benefitting Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital on Sunday.

Thursday | Wok ‘n’ Roll Asian Street Food & Music Experience | $110pp

Tomorrow, Thursday Jan. 11, guests can savor the bold flavors of Asian street food while enjoying live music at Backyard (100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale). This outdoor bar space is a lively place to sample a wide variety of Asian cuisine. The event runs from 6:30 to 9:30pm. Advance tickets are sold out but tickets may be available at the door for $110 per person. This event is strictly 21+.

Sunday | Picnic in the Park | FREE

On Sunday from noon to 4pm festivalgoers are invited to the beautiful Las Olas Oceanside Park (3000 E Las Olas Blvd Fort Lauderdale) for a free, family-friendly, food-centric event. Bring your chairs and blankets to sample cuisine from a wide variety of food trucks, watch kid-friendly cooking demos with celebrity chefs, sip wine and spirits or participate in hands-on culinary classes for all ages. Live entertainment, local artisan vendors and a kids’ zone will also delight guests. The event is presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and is free to attend. The schedule of cooking events is as follows:

  • Class #1 at 12:15pm – Learn to make Chicken on a Stick and Watermelon Pizza
  • Class #2 at 1:15pm – Learn to make Walking Tacos and Funnel Cakes
  • Class #3 at 2:15pm – Learn to make Corn Dogs and Candy Apples

In addition to the scheduled demos, Uri Sacharow and Lauren Navarro from Cocktail Uncultured! Will teach a ‘Tropic Like It’s Hot’ Tiki Cocktail Class. You’ll learn how to make 3 delicious Tiki cocktails. Ingredients are included. Participants are encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts and arrive thirsty.
