Pompano Beach residents will have an opportunity to view a presentation about the next phase of the McNab House and Botanical Gardens project during the virtual Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 1pm.

Last March, the CRA relocated the historic McNab House and garage from 1736 E. Atlantic Boulevard to McNab Park, at 2250 E. Atlantic Boulevard, with the vision of transforming the structures into a new restaurant facility and the adjacent park to the west and south into a public botanical garden.

During the presentation on Tuesday, Bermello Ajamil and Partners (BA), the architecture firm hired by the CRA to redesign the park, will explore potential concepts for the development of the botanical garden.

The overall site area is approximately three acres. The proposed botanical garden would replace the existing parking lot and the Chamber of Commerce building at the intersection of East Atlantic Boulevard and SE 22nd Avenue. The intent is for the garden to be open to the public but available for private functions. BA will design a master plan for the remainder of the park.

Some residents have voiced concern over the potential loss of the existing basketball court and tennis court located in the southern portion of the park. The two shuffle board courts in the northern portion of the park have already been removed, as well as a civic building that was used for community meetings and activities.

The CRA is tentatively targeting November 2020 to launch public outreach workshops to discuss the conceptual design of the park.

Landscape Architect Randy Hollingworth, who is a partner at BA, said he is looking forward to “robust public input” during the design concept process, and believes “there is tremendous potential for the McNab House and Botanical Gardens to become a premiere attraction in Broward County.”

During Tuesday’s presentation, Hollingworth will present a variety of visual concepts that have been successfully implemented in similarly-sized urban parks and open spaces.

The McNab House and Botanical Gardens project is a CRA project that will take place over 2-3 years. There is $2.7 million budgeted for the project.

The McNab House, built in 1926, was moved from its original location on Atlantic Boulevard after the McNab family sold the land for development.

The CRA Board meeting and presentation on Sept. 15 can be viewed on Comcast Channel 78 live and through rebroadcast, as well as through live streaming and archive on the City’s website. Members of the community who wish to participate in the virtual meeting can fill out a public participation registration form.
