Plans are underway to demolish the former Sears Auto Center at the Pompano Citi Centre mall in order to construct a 18,829-square-foot retail and restaurant building on the site. The former Sears retail store, across from the auto center, will be redeveloped into space for multiple tenants, including a Burlington department store.

Burlington will be opening in a space in the old Sears store in about a year. Five Below, a $5-and-under retail chain store, will also be a tenant there. Negotiations are in progress for leases with TJ Maxx and Old Navy.

Aspen Dental has signed a lease for a corner space in the new building. According to the site plan, MOD Pizza, Panda Express and Venetian Nails are also potential tenants for the building, which has about seven bays.

Saito’s Japanese Steakhouse is expected be opening in the main building of Pompano Citi Centre in a couple of months, although that project has been delayed for quite a while. It will be located on the second floor, above Panera Bread. Dangerous Minds Brewing Company, a brewery serving food, is coming soon as well.

An IHOP Restaurant is planned for an outparcel that is east of the Wendy’s located on the southeast corner of NE 12th Terrace and East Copans Road.

The 1.68-acre outparcel where the vacant auto center currently sits is located at 2251 N. Federal Highway, on the south side of East Copans Road.

The new building on that site will consist of 10,357 square feet of retail, 4,725 square feet of restaurants, and 3,747 square feet for the dental office. There will be 89 parking spaces.

A site plan for the new building was approved by the city’s Planning and Zoning Board on June 26. The application was submitted by SVAP Pompano Citi Centre II LP, an affiliate of West Palm Beach-based Sterling Organization.

The site plan and renderings of the new building were reviewed by the city’s Architectural Appearance Committee last week, but will be resubmitted and reviewed again, possibly on Sept 3. The consensus of the committee was that enhancements needed to be made to the back of the building, which faces Copans Road, and has high visibility.

The Sears auto center and retail store, which were owned by Sears’ parent company, closed in December 2018, and were acquired by Sterling Organization the following month. The company also owns the rest of the Pompano Citi Centre, except for Lowe’s, Macy’s, ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, Verizon and Pier One Imports, which own their respective parcels.

About 90 percent of the shopping center is currently leased, according to the Sterling Organization.
