There will be no Fishing Rodeo in Pompano Beach this year.  The Pompano Beach event, which has been operating annually since 1965, has been put on hold for 2019.

John Good is the organizer of the event, as well as the Pompano Beach Seafood Festival. He said the extra time needed to develop the logistics for the Seafood Festival’s new location(Pompano Beach Community Park) made it impossible to produce a second event only a few weeks later.

Capt. Skip Dana is President of the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo.  Via press release, he commented “I can assure everyone that the key word is “postpone”.  This is in no way the end of the Rodeo.  In fact, we are looking at this as the beginning of a new era for South Florida’s oldest tournament.  We are excited about the future and already kicking around a number of ideas for 2020.”

Good says “hopefully the event will be back next year.”  He “doesn’t think it is going away” but added “tournament fishing events have changed” dramatically over the past few years and that has had an effect on the success of the landmark Pompano Beach event.

So, while that was not a one hundred percent confirmation that the event will be returning next year, it does seem that Dana and Good have intentions of picking up next year where they left off in 2018.

The Fishing Rodeo is a non-profit event and Good says despite this year’s cancelation, the organization still intends to make a sizable contribution to Shipwreck Park, the major diving attraction, just off the Pompano Beach coast.

Of course, the Pompano Beach fishing and diving community is large and all types of water sports play a huge role in the city’s economy and recreational life.  There are still many, many opportunities for fishing, boating and diving things to do in Pompano Beach.
