POMPANO BEACH, DEERFIELD BEACH FACE MASKS- Original story posted 5pm.

UPDATE 8PM:  Broward County has issued a mandatory face mask order that will take effect after midnight tonight.  Click here for the new, updated story.

Pompano Beach became the latest city in Broward County to issue an emergency order urging all residents and visitors to wear cloth masks or other cloth face coverings whenever they are outside of their homes, consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Florida Department of Health guidelines for personal protective equipment to help combat the spread of the coronavirus.

Earlier this week, Deerfield Beach put in place new guidelines for wearing face masks in public, and Lighthouse Point has plans to do the same.

The Pompano Beach order states that all people within the city are “strongly encouraged,” to wear cloth face coverings, but should not use N95-rated masks unless they are providing health care, police, fire or emergency management services, or are engaged in other life safety activities.

The order can be enforced by the city’s law enforcement agency, as well as the city’s Code Enforcement Officers, although no penalty for noncompliance is mentioned.

The order will remain in place for as long as the state of emergency in Pompano Beach is in effect.

Deerfield Beach amended its emergency stay-at-home order to include the new CDC guidelines for wearing face masks while in any public setting, including when visiting essential businesses, utilizing essential services and engaging in essential activities (except while participating in outdoor physical recreational activities).

Deerfield Beach also added a provision to its emergency order which makes the improper disposal of used personal protective equipment – including face masks, cloth coverings, gloves and scrubs – a misdemeanor punishable by a $500 fine, 60 days in jail, or both.

The order states that, to prevent creating a biohazard through illegal dumping or littering of used personal protective equipment, all persons must dispose of the items in proper trash receptacles.

The amended Deerfield Beach order also strongly encourages all essential retail and commercial establishments to implement policies for employees to use personal protective equipment, such as face coverings and gloves, subject to the availability of such items.

UPDATE:  Tonight’s mandatory order from Broward County, supersedes the Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach face masks orders as well as those from other cities including Coral Springs, Oakland Park, Plantation and Tamarac encouraging all residents and visitors to wear cloth facial coverings while in public places.
