Another new business is set to open in the Old Town district of Pompano Beach. A vacant space at 122 N. Flagler Ave. will soon be home to a dual-concept venture created by Jeff Zadoff, president of Brighton Hospitality Group.

The front area will be dedicated to Sweets and More (SAM), featuring specialty handcrafted items that can be ordered for parties, weddings and other special events or occasions. As the business launches, three products will be offered, but more items are in the pipeline for 2020. All products will be made on the premises.

The current menu includes Cupcake Sushi, a dual-patented dessert, which until now, was only available in Key West, where it was created, and through Internet orders. SAM is a licensee for Cupcake Sushi, LLC in the greater Pompano Beach and Lighthouse Point area, as well as several other areas.

There will also be candy “sea glass” and gourmet rock candy. The sea glass comes in an array of colors and fruit flavors. Crunchy on the outside, with a soft jelly inside, it’s a twist on Korean kohakutou candy, said Zadoff. The rock candy will come in traditional flavors, such as grape, as well as the more unusual Kahlua and cream (geared towards adults). It will be grown in individual containers that will be on display.

Shack in Back, a coffee house and dessert shop concept, will occupy space overlooking “The Backyard,” a new public plaza that the Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is in the process of creating as part of its effort to redevelop Old Town as an arts and entertainment destination.

The menu will feature coffees from a well-known Cuban coffee roaster, homemade desserts and sweets from SAM. Desserts will include cakes, pies and a banana bread called “Going Bananas,” which is made from an old Zadoff family recipe, with “a few secret ingredients.”

Shack in Back will have seating inside, as well as on a large, outdoor patio, where there will be live music on certain nights of the week.

SAM is anticipated to open before the end of 2019, but will begin taking pre-orders on Nov. 1, to receive products on Dec. 1. Pre-orders can be placed by phone or by appointment. A phone number will be available soon, but in the meantime, SAM can be contacted via the e-mail address currently provided on its website (samfl.com). Internet ordering will be available through the website starting in 2020.

SAM will be open to the public during certain hours, and tastings will be by appointment. Orders can be picked up or delivered. The signature sweets will be sold in gift boxes. For example, gift boxes of Cupcake Sushi can be ordered with 8, 16 or 32 pieces.

Customers will also be able to book a Cupcake Sushi “live action cart” for special events, where the dessert sushi is hand-rolled right in front of everyone’s eyes.

SAM gets its name from Zadoff’s 14-year-old son, who is helping to launch the concept, along with Zadoff’s wife Elizabeth.

Shack in Back is expected to open in 8 to 12 months, to coincide with the opening of The Backyard, said Zadoff.

Renovations of the premises have just gotten underway. The architectural work is being carried out by longtime Pompano Beach-based DK Architects. The firm just relocated from their offices east of Federal Highway to a space on NE First Street in Old Town.

Joy Lynskey and her team at Jewel Toned Interiors have been entrusted with designing the interior, as well as the patio area. Jewel Toned Interiors is the design firm that did the interior of the newly opened Oceanic restaurant in the Pompano Beach Fishing Village.

Zadoff’s other local projects have included Buddha Sky Bar in Delray Beach, D’Best Sandwich Shop in Boca Raton and Papa’s Raw Bar in Lighthouse Point.

Zadoff said he chose Old Town as the location for his latest endeavor because it’s set to become “one of the hottest areas in all of South Florida, the place that everyone is going to be talking about very soon.”

“It has everything,” said Zadoff. “It has a diverse population, a great infrastructure, and the City and CRA have the same incredible vision for Old Town, the Innovation District and the entire Northwest CRA district.”
