Lighthouse Point Yacht Club’s Swim Event This Saturday

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It’s not too late to register for the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club’s “Laps for Lightning” event on Saturday, Sept. 7, which will help its youth swim team raise money to purchase a Thor Guard lightning warning system and digital pace clock. Youth swimmers (ages 5-12) and adults (age 13 and up) can participate in the friendly competition, which takes place from 9am to 12pm at the yacht club, and is open to members and non-members.

The race formats for youth are 25 meters and 50 meters for individual swimmers, and 100 meters for team relays. Adults races will be 200-, 400- and 800-meter team relays. Adults can form a team of four (male, female or mixed). Teams can relay the distance in any format, as long as each team member swims at least once.

There will be a 50/50 raffle and a “lightning auction” for gift baskets and gift certificates generously donated by local businesses. A cash snack bar and drinks bar will start at 10am. An after-party will follow the event, with live music on the pool deck and an inflatable water slide for family fun.

The youth swim team came up with the idea to hold the event because they wanted to raise $3,000 for the lightning alert system – which they felt would benefit not only the yacht club but the surrounding neighborhood – and to showcase their skills in competition.

Martens restarted the yacht club’s youth swim program a year-and-a-half ago, and hopes to start an adult team. Lessons are taught by a USA-certified swim instructor.
