A Message from Police Chief Licata

During the past few weeks, NE Broward County has seen a significant increase in the number of car burglaries and car thefts in residential areas. In almost every case, criminals are bypassing locked vehicles and targeting unlocked vehicles looking for an easy score. Rarely do criminals force entry into vehicles, because the act of breaking a window or forcing a door open creates noise and brings attention to their crimes. Once inside these unlocked vehicles, they are stealing anything of value, including personal identification, electronics, cell phones, firearms, loose change and money, designer glasses and more.

In a number of cases, when the criminals find key fobs that have been left inside unlocked vehicles, they are stealing the vehicles. The stolen vehicles are then used to commit additional crimes in our city and other communities in the South Florida area. On many occasions, our patrol officers have intercepted these perpetrators and have attempted to stop them, only to have them flee, causing additional hazardous conditions for citizens and our officers.

In a new crime trend, criminals are specifically targeting high end luxury vehicles that are unlocked. They drive through communities looking for luxury vehicles with the side mirrors in the outward position (this generally means the vehicle is unlocked). Criminals then enter the unlocked vehicle, press the push/start button, and if the key fob is anywhere in the vehicle, the car starts up and they steal the car.

Here’s something you should know. Criminals talk to each other and share information with their counterparts on areas they’ve has success easily entering unlocked vehicles and stealing expensive property. Encourage your friends and neighbors to lock their car doors and stop the trend. If they don’t find easy targets in your neighborhood, they will go somewhere else.

Please help us prevent these types of crimes by doing your part.

•Always lock your car doors

•Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle

•Park your vehicle in a well lit location (keep exterior lights on)

•Do not leave key fobs inside your vehicle[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With The Increased Bicycle Use On Our Roadways, Motorists And Bicyclists Are Encouraged To Safely Share The Roadway

As we navigate through these challenging times, more and more families and individuals have been enjoying their time together, and riding their bikes on our local roadways to exercise and get some fresh air. We ask that everyone do so in a safe and responsible manner to avoid the risk of unnecessary injury. Bicyclists need to remember that you are responsible for adhering to traffic laws. It’s fun to ride side by side with a group of people, but not safe when doing so with approaching vehicular traffic. While Florida law requires that bicyclists ride no more than two abreast on the roadway, please pay attention to approaching vehicles and stay close to the right edge of the roadway. Motorists should also be mindful of the increased bicycle traffic on our roadways. When you approach a bicyclist on the roadway, please slow down, and remember you are required to give the cyclist at least three feet distance when passing.

Bicyclists and pedestrians should also be mindful that you can sometimes be difficult to see, especially in low light conditions. Never assume that the other traffic can see you. Add to your safety by wearing light colored and reflective clothing, ensure that your lights and reflectors are working properly to increase visibility to other traffic, and children under 16 must always wear a bike helmet. Adults should wear them too. Enjoy our beautiful city streets and sidewalks and please be safe and courteous.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]City Offices will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day.
