The quixotic quest for the perfect burger has consumed food journalists for quite some time. In an age when everyone is well aware they should be eating more vegetables, whole grains and fruits, we still pine for hamburgers. Recently, the Food Network tackled the national burger scene in “52 Top Burgers from Coast to Coast.” What a pleasant surprise to find our very own Charm City Burger on the map. Sure we know what a gem it is, but a little national recognition never hurt anyone. Of course we had been to Charm City many times since they opened a few years ago, but we made a special trip to celebrate — any excuse to indulge. Here are a few of our favorites…

  • THE VOLCANO: If heat is your thing, the Volcano is a must. Topped with pepper jack cheese, volcano sauce (magma-inspired hot sauce) and pickled jalapeño.
  • THE BIG SLOPPY: Many chefs will agree, top anything with a fried egg and you’ll be delighted. (OK, maybe not certain flavors of ice cream.) Along with a fried egg, this burger is served up with double cheese, peppered bacon and a hash brown. Don’t try to fight the mess. Just relish in the sheer delight as that bright yellow yolk converts your already sinful burger into a meal from the heavens. If this sounds appealing, but a touch overwhelming, a smaller version known as The Lil Sloppy is also available.
  • THE SOUTHERN BELLE: Inspired by cuisine developed south of the Mason-Dixon line, this choice is topped with muenster cheese, barbecue sauce, haystack onions, creamy bacon coleslaw, tomato and garlic aioli.
  • A Mac 'n' Cheese Bite: crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside.
  • ALL ABOUT THE PATTY: All of Charm City burgers start with a five-star, chef-designed proprietary meat blend. Or you can upgrade to grass-fed beef or Kobe.
  • The inside of Charm City is bright, colorful and friendly.

SOME OTHER FAVORITES:

The Emperor

How often do you get treated like royalty? For truffle fans, this choice is a no-brainer. It’s a half-pound Wagyu beef patty topped with sautéed mushrooms, aged Gruyère and truffle aioli.

The Cowboy

The traditional bacon-cheeseburger gets a makeover. The Cowboy is topped with thick-cut peppered bacon, cheddar cheese, sautéed onions and mushrooms. It’s a safe choice, but the cumulative quality of all the toppings elevates The Cowboy beyond your typical bacon-cheeseburger.
