Three new stores are getting ready to open their doors this week in the former Sears retail building at Pompano Citi Centre, the shopping center located at the southwest corner of North Federal Highway and East Copans Road in Pompano Beach.

Five Below, a $5-and-under retail chain store, is set to open on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Burlington department store and TJ Maxx are slated to open on Thursday, Oct. 7.

The old Sears retail building, which has been completely revamped, will also be home to Crafty Crab (a full-service seafood restaurant and bar) and America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses. These two businesses, located in the northwest corner of the building on the ground floor, are expected to open by the end of the year, according to Carlos Fernandez, property manager of Pompano Citi Centre.

The new TJ Maxx store at Pompano Citi Centre will replace the TJ Maxx location that was in the Venetian Isle Shopping Center in Lighthouse Point.

Bakery Fusion Café — a breakfast and brunch restaurant with a bakery and market featuring artisanal breads, ice creams, pastries and desserts — is expected to open this month in the central open-air section of Pompano Citi Centre.

A new 18,829-square-foot retail and restaurant building that is being constructed on the site where the Sears Auto Center used to be, fronting Copans Road, should be completed in November. The building has six tenants — Aspen Dental, Venetian Nail Spa, The Joint Chiropractic, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Wing Stop and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. The first tenant to open will be Aspen Dental, and the others will follow, said Fernandez. Leases for two other spaces in the new building are currently being negotiated.

There are three spaces still available for lease on the second floor of the old Sears retail store.

OTHER NEW OPENINGS AT POMPANO CITI CENTRE

Hook Fish & Chicken — specializing in fried fish, seafood and chicken meals — is anticipated to open in 2-3 months in a ground-floor alcove of the shopping center.

Cognizant Cards & Collectibles — a hobby store featuring collectible sports cards, Pokémon and custom supplies — has plans to open in December on the second floor of the building that lies just north of Lowe’s.

Centered Memories Event Venue, located on the third floor of the building that houses Sola Salon Studios, opened at the end of September. The venue offers 3,000 square feet of customizable space for hosting events such as birthday and anniversary celebrations, bridal and baby showers, and private dinners.

356-UNIT RESIDENTIAL PROJECT AT POMPANO CITI CENTRE

Plans are also moving forward to build a gated 356-unit residential development on a portion of property at Pompano Citi Centre. The market rate rental apartments will occupy the site of the former Macy’s department store and the surrounding parking area. Sterling Organization, which owns Pompano Citi Centre, has a contract with The Morgan Group, a multi-family developer, to build the project.

In February, the Pompano Beach City Commission approved on first reading the developer’s request for a land use plan amendment to change the land use designation of the 12-acre site from commercial to residential.

The land use plan amendment was approved by the Broward County Commission in September, and is expected to go to the City Commission for a second reading on  October 12, 2021.

The site where the proposed residential development would be built will also need to be rezoned as a Planned Development, according to the city’s Development Services Department.
