Broward County late this afternoon issued an emergency order instructing all people in the county to wear a facial covering when visiting essential businesses for services. The order also requires that facial coverings be worn by all people who are providing essential services during in-person interactions with the public.

The order, which is mandatory, not voluntary, takes effect at 12:01am on Saturday, April 11, 2020. It will remain in place for as long as the existing state of emergency is in effect.

The order does not apply to young children under the age of two, and individuals who have difficulty breathing, or to public safety, fire, and life safety personnel, as their personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements are governed by their respective agencies.

Face coverings can be constructed with any material, however, Broward County strongly recommends the utilization of CDC guidelines.

Used masks and other disposable personal protective safety items, such as gloves, must be discarded in garbage containers. Littering of these items is prohibited.

The emergency order is in addition to, and does not modify, any social distancing requirements imposed by other applicable orders.

The order defines minimum standards in Broward County, but municipalities can establish more stringent measures within their jurisdiction to the extent permitted by law.

Each of the county’s 31 municipalities will be responsible for enforcing the order, with a penalty for anyone in noncompliance.
