Latest on Diver Death near Pompano Beach/Hillsboro Inlet
POMPANO BEACH DIVING DEATH: The diver whose body was found yesterday near Hillsboro Inlet has been identified. The victim is Peter Mendez of Davie.
Mendez was boating with three other friends on Wednesday morning when he fell overboard. The foursome was out on the ocean in the Hillsboro Beach-Pompano Beach area getting ready to take advantage of lobster mini-season, which kicked off yesterday and continues through tonight.
The Sun-Sentinel reports that Mendez was an experienced diver, with 23-years of diving under his belt. Various conflicting sources say Mendez was between 60 and 70 years of age.
There are an average of two deaths a year relating to the annual two-day lobster mini-season. So far, Mendez is the only reported death this year.
