New Pompano Beach Restaurant: Kabuki Sushi/Asian Fusion

KABUKI POMPANO BEACH RESTAURANT – Kabuki, the new restaurant located where Japanese/Sushi restaurant Yakuza used to be, may look like its predecessor but it many, many ways it is quite different.

For starters, Kabuki serves a broad Asian Fusion menu including Sushi, Japanese Cuisine and Thai/Asian Fusion. The new restaurant offers a wider menu with more varied prices and impressive lunch and happy hour specials.

Kabuki, which roughly translates to “out of the ordinary”, aims to offer “Something for everyone”, according to co-owner Ann Marie Sementelli.

The restaurant hosts an impressive sushi bar with fresh offerings ranging from standard rolls to more elaborate fair. I’m usually a meat and potatoes kind of sushi guy (or perhaps more  appropriately a raw fish and rice guy) but I was blown away by the signature dishes I sampled.

I could compare the “Tuna Yuki” to an ahi tuna salad but that would not do it justice. It was one of the most flavorful dishes I have ever tasted, with flavorful fruit mixed with the fresh tuna and vegetables.

Another excellent option, “Tropical Paradise” is a “riceless roll”, something I didn’t know even existed but I am glad I do now. It features Tuna and Salmon with cucumber, asparagus and other vegetables and spices replacing the rice and is a winner, too.

Marybeth, one of my Pompano! magazine colleagues joined me at lunch. She had never even tried any type of sushi in her 49+ years. With a little arm twisting, I think I (and Kabuki, of course) have made a convert out of her. She was surprised by how much she enjoyed the dishes.

She also was a fan of the pineapple rice, served in a half pineapple “bowl”. It was just one of the many Thai dishes on the menu but time and stomach space prevented us from trying anything else.

The menu really is quite large. From my count, it includes 6 soups, a dozen salads, close to 40 tapas appetizers, almost 100 different sushi combinations, and another 50 or so specialty dishes, including a crispy duck that I didn’t sample but looked delicious.

Most meals are priced in the $15-$20 range, although some specialty dishes are higher.

The Pompano Beach restaurant also features extensive lunch and happy hour specials seven days a week. Lunch is served until three and happy hour goes from 3:00 until 6:30 pm.

For lunch, you can get a full size entree, a roll and a soup or salad for $12.95. There are a couple of dozen options to choose from for the “You Pick Two” special.

The Happy Hour drink and food options are even more extensive and feature large portions which are available at tables as well as the bar.

Obviously, Kabuki is quite impressive, as is owner Sementelli. The former banker and working mom is able to make the rounds to all four Kabuki restaurants (three are located in Palm Beach County), while finding time to pick up her kids from school each day.

She has incredible energy and enthusiasm which is reflected at Kabuki Pompano Beach restaurant.

If you don’t know where Kabuki is located, that might be because it’s been taking a while to get city approval for their signage. Interestingly, the sign for the side of the building was approved but the main sign (identical to the side sign, according to Sementelli) has not yet been signed off on.

Kabuki, Pompano Beach restaurant is located at 2515 East Atlantic Blvd. Pompano Beach in front of the Publix shopping center and is open until 10:30 daily (11:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays).
