The City of Pompano Beach will be holding its First Annual Cultural Arts Awards ceremony on May 15 at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. A limited number of complimentary tickets are available for the public.

This year’s arts awards ceremony, which has a “Lights, Camera, Action!” theme, will honor the spoken word poet known as Eccentrich, Curtain Call Playhouse Artistic Director Kris Coffelt and visual artist Sirju S. Mohan. Eccentrich, who was ranked fourteenth in the world among women performance poets two years ago, will recite one of her poems. Coffelt will enact a scene from a play, and Mohan will do live painting on stage throughout the event. In addition, there will be performances by a professional jazz vocalist and a saxophonist.

The Pompano Beach Cultural Arts Committee created the Cultural Arts Awards “in order to recognize the outstanding creativity taking place in Pompano Beach.” To be nominated for the awards, the arts organization or artist had to have been presenting their art program in the city for a minimum of five years in the categories of dance, music, spoken word, theater or visual arts.

“To see the bloom of the arts is really exciting for me,” said Eccentrich, whose family goes back five generations in Pompano Beach. “I think our communities benefit from the arts and I try to use art as a key to increase and bring awareness to effective communication.”

A reception will be held from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, and the awards ceremony will take place from 7:45pm to 9pm. Light hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks will be served; wine and beer will be available for purchase. Dress is semi-formal or business attire.

Although admission is free, seating is limited. Complimentary tickets can be reserved online at eventbrite.com. In the “Event” field, type the words “Pompano Beach Cultural Arts,” and a box will open with a link to the event.
