Indian Princesses Break our Hearts with Cuteness

Although the coronavirus lockdown has interrupted our daily routines, it has also given us a chance to spend more time at home with our families. This month, we wanted to give our readers a fun, stress-free activity to do while social distancing at home.

 

 

The lighthouse illustration on the cover of our magazines was designed by Point! Publishing’s creative director, Susan Rosser. We asked our readers to color in the cover and post a photo of their artwork on social media with the hashtag #colorthelighthouse.

 

When Britt Lanier, a member of the Lighthouse Point community, received his Lighthouse Point issue, he thought this would be perfect for the fathers and daughters of the Princess Creek Tribe. Britt and his daughter, Emory, are members of the YMCA Indian Princess program which is a father-daughter group specifically intended for fathers and their daughters to spend more quality time together. The Creek Tribe is mostly from Northeast Broward and roughly 30 families live in Lighthouse Point.

“The purpose of the program is to spend more time with our daughters and COVID-19 has made it difficult for us to get together and plan activities”, said Britt. “When I saw the Lighthouse Point May cover I thought, wow! This would be fun to share with the tribe — what a great idea.”

 

The tribe loved the idea and created a fun social distancing project with coloring the lighthouse. The princesses pre-colored their lighthouses and then shared their “Masterpiece Creations” with the group via Tuesday’s Zoom meeting.

 

Emory was so excited to color the lighthouse with her father and share her artwork with the other princesses.

 

“Overall it was a really fun project and the group really enjoyed both coloring and getting together to share, said Britt. Thank you for creating something interactive and fun in these trying times.”

American Heritage Senior, Makena Vargo, organized the drive to raise support in collecting school and art supplies for students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools.

 

It takes just a few pink erasers, crayons, glue sticks, composition books, colored pencils, folders, paper, pencils and pencil cases to equip students with basic supplies to start the school year. But for some students and their parents, even those supplies are simply out of reach financially.

 

Many of us used our time in quarantine to clean out closets and have found many unused or unwanted items. If there are extra school supplies laying around that won’t be used, please consider donating them to the community.
