Oct. 5 – Second Generation Highwaymen Art Show at BaCa

In partnership with the Pompano Beach Historical Society, Bailey Contemporary Arts Center will host the art show for the second generation of Highwaymen artists. In the early 1950’s through the 1980’s a group of 26 African American artists known as the “Florida Highwaymen” used vivid and bright colors to paint the beautiful untouched Florida landscape. They painted wind-bent palm trees, serene sunsets, churning oceans and bright red Poinciana trees. Their paintings became legendary and are now sometimes worth approximately $5,000 per painting.

Now, the second generation of Highwaymen artists have continued the legacy. Their artwork will be on display at the Bailey Contemporary Arts Center. The preview night for the show will include a meet and greet with the artists, wine, beer and hors d’oeurves. The 2nd Generation artists attending include Ellis Buckner Jr., Daniel Butler, Dorene Butler, Ray McClendon, Roy McClendon Jr. and Kelvin Hair. Special guest artist Al Black will also be in attendance.

When: Reception is on Thursday Oct. 5 from 6 to 9pm; show continues on Friday, Oct. 6 from 10am to 9pm and Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10am – 4pm[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
